Gesamtkunstwerk: Total art

To be honest, even when I first heard the name Hermann Nitsch, it didn't give me a good impression. The epithet ‘the world's most repulsive artist,’ along with words like animal carcasses, blood, slaughter, and ritual, came to mind first... If Damien Hirst earned the nickname ‘butcher’ for his stuffed shark, Hermann Nitsch brought life and death into the spotlight in a far more explicit and direct manner than Damien Hirst. Perhaps that's why some even went so far as to say Damien Hirst seemed tamed and refined compared to Hermann Nitsch.
